another drafts folder rescue. They end abruptly because I don@lt remember where the hell I was going with them.

Highlights:

• Jonathan Edelson showed up in a button-down shirt and long gauzy black skirt. The invitation had suggested "business casual" dress.

  "What business are you in?" I asked him.

  "I'm a researcher," he declared, beaming.

  I told this story to Spike. "What does that make you," she said. "A cocaine dealer?"

• Aidan's discovery that the pool's recirc pump could be combined with the floating foam tubes to produce an effective medium-range water battle weapon.

• I went looking for Charlotte, to get the keys to the car. Inside the banquet hall, five-year-old Zoe is running in tight circles on the dancefloor.

  "Watcha doin'?" I asked.

  "We can't go outside," Zoe explained breathlessly, without pausing in her laps, "'cause our mummy and daddy aren't here, and we can't go outside without their permission."

  "Where are they?" I asked.

  "Mummy is upstairs trying to find out why Karen is freaking out."

  "Huh. Speaking of responsible adults, do you know where Charlotte is?"

  "She's upstairs with mummy. They're trying to find out why Karen is freaking out."
