A dear friend told me about an in-law of hers who recently said in conversation that he'd rather be impotent than bald.
"That's particularly funny," I said, "because so much of why men fear going bald is that it can symbolize impotence."
"Exactly," she said, "some people would rather have the symbol than the reality."
