No horseradish, please. It clogs the tubes
I'm getting a transfusion right now--my first in about a week. The last one I got spiked my fever badly enough that it had to be stopped in the middle, so I'm a little nervous. The sight of the blood slowly creeping along the six feet or so of IV tube, mixing in subtle gradients with the saline ahead of it, is pretty and a little ominous. I think anything slowly creeping towards you is always going to be a bit creepy, no matter how benign.
The murky matte crimson of the stuff going into me is more reminiscent of old catsup than the bright vermillion stuff of open cuts. It's been processed with decoagulants, irradiated to kil all the white cells.... This just in: it's just red cells, with the platelets removed. No decoagulants necessary. That may help explain the dark color.
